On the occasion of World Toilet Day November 19, 2020 Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge-2021. It is aimed at preventing hazardous cleaning of sewers and septic tanks and to promote mechanised cleaning. It also intends to thrust upon the following aspects: mechanized cleaning of sewers and septic tanks in order to minimize necessity of human entry, providing proper protective gears and equipment and identification of informal workers and thereby integrating them into formal mechanism.

The validation and scoring of the aforementioned parameters were a result of careful coordination and combination of documental evidence, direct observation and citizen feedbacks.
In this challenge, 246 cities were nominated to participate. The field inspection was conducted in these cities with total of 31000+ feedbacks collected during the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge.
The cities securing 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in the different population categories will be awarded: More than 10 Lakh; 3-10 Lakh and up to 3 Lakh. Additionally, ULBs affirming to the below criteria will also be felicitated: Cities ranked 4th & 5th in each category; Top-2 performing States and Top performing UT.
